Envy

There they are
Dancing on the water
graceful,
twirling shadows.
of light.

And the others-
They are all applauding
as if it were themselves
being lifted up so gloriously.

I'm deep below it seems
So far away-
Though I can see
Their feet
Skimming the edge
There toes
Dipping in the ocean,
leaping
spinning
in their dance.

I drown
Reaching toward the sunlit air
More unnoticed than unseen.
My feet kicking
Wildly against
The coming dark

The inevitable dark

But they dance to the screams,
More unheard than silent
Though silent they were.

Motivation wretched from my finger-
Stolen
by the undeserving dark

The terribly unexpected dark.

All it left me with
Was the memories of dancing on water,
And a perfect view
Of what once was mine.

What should be mine.
